Glad to hear you are going to update the site Jim.
My mother seems to come from a different Carey line but I like to keep informed you never know when branches may meet.

    Apologies

    Hi,
sorry but the carey site was the target of a recent attack. We believe we have cleared all the malware – but if anyone gets any notification of malware would they let me know where abouts in the site this was ?

    cheers

    Solar Power

Well Chris showed the way by installing solar power panels and now, not to be outdone, we solar deprived Pom’s in Congleton are also going ahead with solar panels. Just agreed a price with a company and hopefully in the not too distant future we will also have a solar bank on the roof :-)

I won’t be putting my balaclava on to rob that one!

    • Jim 4:29 pm on February 2, 2011 Reply

well – early Feb we get a shiny roof – hope it translates to a lower Utility bill :-)

    • Jim 9:10 am on April 5, 2011 Reply

well we have had a month or more of the Solar panels. Along with a more conscious attitude to saving the juice the usage is definitely going down and hopefully is translating to lower bills :-)

Finding it hard at the moment to get back into the research for the Family Tree. It just seems so difficult to go back that next step before John Carey of Backwell. Have found someone who may be the business but so far cant prove the link – ah well – will keep trying

Hi Jim, yes frustrating isn’t it ?!! Do you have anything to go on at all ? I could try and do something from this end if possible. Have you ever visited Somerset by the way ? Jo

      • Jim 6:29 pm on February 5, 2011 Reply

just realised I didnt reply to this – will try to search out any half leads I had and pass them on. I have passed through Somerset but not sent any time there – but intend to over the next couple of years with my caravan :-)

The big problem is that the rats ate a lot of the records in Backwell and also the records were written over in all directions – so hard to track.

    • joanne 9:38 pm on February 6, 2011 Reply

Darn rats….so inconsiderate ;-) If you do find anything if you want to let me know, I’ll try and get down that way again once the weather improves. Must try and meet up when you visit Jim, would be nice to meet up with more of the family :-) My cousin is hopefully visiting in March so will have a good chat with her and see if we can find out anything new.

      Hi Jim,
The comments on posts – they are listed as most recent first which seems slightly confusing – it makes it look like the Carey’s are all psychic.

      • Jim 8:10 am on December 18, 2010 Reply

Hmm – guess you may be right – I see facebook does it your way. My reasoning was that if there were a lot of comments then you wouldn’t want to have to scroll down through a lot – but that isn’t likely to happen – so you may be right.
        Any views from others ?
        Jim

      • Jim 9:50 pm on December 18, 2010 Reply

no view from others – so we will try it your way for a while and see if I get any objections

      • sean 12:08 pm on December 21, 2010 Reply

i think its because everyone is commenting on the story rather than hitting reply

        • Jim 1:30 pm on December 21, 2010 Reply

Ah – yes – makes sense.

So anyone commenting – make sure you click on the reply button after you have entered your comment. You can comment by clicking on Reply against any of the comments/posts – or click on the Read More or Add Comment link. Then enter your comment but MAKE SURE that you CLICK on the Reply button after you have added your comment

    Quote from some Carey History

Quote from EH Shopland’s (another new relative) book Manifold Memories

“Parish Registers are dull tomes, of interest only to genealogists and solicitors seeking to prove a client’s legal inheritance and to the American anxious to trace his British origin. But now and again a curious entry with an interesting story appears; one such is to be found in the registers of the Parish Church, Clevedon.

In the year 1801, on the 5th day of May, there appears an entry recording the mass Baptism of ten children whose ages range from twins of one year to a girl of eleven years, all children of John and Betty Carey. The story behind this bare entry is that John and Betty Carey lived in the old thatched house (standing yet) in Carey’s Lane (later renamed All Saints’ Lane after All Saints’ Church was built) East Clevedon.

The only church in Clevedon in those days was the Parish Church at West End, and the question of having one’s children baptized being a serious one, and the party being a large one, the parents borrowed the four-wheeled farm wagon, harnessed old Dobbin, and all piled inside and set off for the Parish Church. Upon their arrival the Vicar of the time proceeded to work his way through the very elongated service which was enlivened part-way through by young Jenny Carey waxing impatiently and saying, “My turn next, Daddy.” It was over at last, and the party re-embarked in the farm wagon and returned home.

One of the children baptized that day was Samuel Carey, my grandfather [Jim Carey's note: William Shopland married Margaret Carey daughter of Samuel. Edmund Shopland, son of William Shopland wrote this book]. He built a cottage at East Clevedon, under the now apparently illegal system of “lifehold leases”. By this system he acquired a grant of land on the left hand side at the foot of Strawberry Hill, from the reigning landlord for which, instead of pay money, he signed a lease whereby he named three of his sons and when those three men were all dead, the land and everything on it reverted to the landlord. Upon this land he built three cottages in one of which (still standing) his daughter Margaret (my mother) went to live upon her marriage to William Shopland, and in which I was born on the 25th day of December, 1872.”

Your website has been really helpful in my research of my family connections to the Carey family. As a matter of interest EH Shopland is in fact Edmund not Edward. His mother was Margaret Carey and he was my great grandfather.

      • Jim 5:35 pm on January 3, 2011 Reply

excellent – I am so pleased that you found it useful :-) . I have updated the quote above to get rid of my mistake. I would love it if you could point me to anywhere where you may have documented your tree so i can add to ours
        cheers, Jim

    Carey Trivia

Variations:Cary, Carie, Carrie, Carye, Carew, Karry, Keary, Keery, Kayre, de Kary

Like many, the Carey surname possesses four separate and variety origins. The first is an English habitation name for various places in Devon and Somerset, and are so called from their situation near the river Cary.

Places of note being Castle Cary, Cary Fitzpaine and Babcary. The surname is also a Welsh/Cornish variant of Carew, which is known to represent a dweller by the hill fort.
Another possible derivation of the Carey surname is as a habitation name for settlers from the Norman Manor of Carrey near Lisieux (the etymology of which is uncertain). It is also the family name of the Viscounts Falkland.

It is also recognised as an Anglicised form of the Gaelic surname of O Ciardha.

All of which is a frightening prospect for genealogists looking to trace their surname back to one single root origin, which is why surnames can only be looked on as clues to family tree riddles rather than answers.

The name is established in most English counties, but is found primarily in the West Country.

Early recorded mentions of the Carey surname include Richard de Kary (1242) noted in the Liber Feodorum, together with a Robert Karye (1296) recorded in the Sussex Subsidy Rolls. Famous examples of the Carey surname and its variants throughout history include: George Leonard Carey (1935-), Anglican clergyman and Archbishop of Canterbury from 1991 to 2002; and Peter Carey (1943-), Australian writer, author of The True History Of The Kelly Gang and Oscar And Lucinda. Of course there is also a John Carey from Bristol (~1610) that was part of the Plymouth Pilgrims that went to the good old US of A (hope we can show a link to here at some poiunt as that branch is very well researched)

The name Carey along with its other derivations…

    Stylized family tree
The name Carey, along with its other derivations, yields a long and illustrious history in North Western Europe, specifically in what is now the British Isles, the Republic of Ireland, and North West France.

Thanks to Glyn Brian in Gwent

Received some great input from Glyn Brian in Gwent. Glyn is a relative descended from Samuel Carey (brother to John Carey that I am descended from and son of John and Betty Carey). Glyn passed me the item about the mass baptism that is recorded in EH Shopland’s (another new relative) book Manifold Memories. I have ordered this book from an antiquarian bookseller in the UK. Glyn has passed me stacks of great information. Thanks Glyn – you’re a marvel!
